Considering laser hair removal? Below are answers to some of the most common questions about treatment, preparation, results, and what to expect at Rammos Plastic Surgery & MedSpa.
How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will I Need?
Laser hair removal requires a series of treatments because hair grows in different stages, and treatment is most effective during the active growth phase.
The number of treatments needed varies based on the treatment area, hair color and thickness, skin type, hormones, and individual hair-growth patterns. Your provider will create a treatment plan based on your individual needs and goals.
How Often Are Laser Hair Removal Treatments Done?
We typically recommend scheduling laser hair removal treatments 4–6 weeks apart. This allows time for additional hairs to enter the active growth phase so they can be effectively targeted during your next treatment.
Your provider may adjust your treatment schedule depending on the area being treated and your individual hair-growth pattern.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Laser hair removal is generally well tolerated. During treatment, you may feel brief warmth or a snapping sensation as the light energy is delivered.
The BBL HERO™ system incorporates cooling technology to help keep the skin comfortable throughout treatment. Sensitivity varies depending on the area being treated.
How Should I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?
Before your appointment:
- Shave the treatment area as directed by your provider.
- Avoid waxing, plucking, or tweezing before and throughout your treatment series.
- Avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure.
- Avoid self-tanning products on the treatment area.
- Let your provider know about any medications or skincare products you are currently using.
We will provide specific instructions based on your skin and treatment area.
Can I Shave Between Laser Hair Removal Treatments?
Yes. Shaving is the preferred method of hair removal between treatments because it removes hair above the skin while leaving the follicle intact.
Avoid waxing, tweezing, or plucking during your treatment series. These methods remove the hair from the follicle, which means there may not be a target for the light energy during your next treatment.
What Should I Expect After Laser Hair Removal?
Temporary redness, warmth, sensitivity, or mild swelling around the hair follicles can occur after treatment and generally resolves on its own.
Treated hairs will gradually begin to shed over the following days and weeks. This can sometimes look like the hair is continuing to grow, but it is often the treated hair working its way out of the follicle.
Allow the hairs to shed naturally and avoid picking or aggressively exfoliating the treatment area.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
Laser hair removal is best described as providing long-term hair reduction rather than guaranteeing permanent removal of every hair.
As you progress through your treatment series, you should notice less hair growth and finer, less noticeable regrowth. Hormonal changes, aging, medications, and other factors can contribute to future hair growth, so occasional maintenance treatments may be recommended.
What Hair Colors Respond Best to Laser Hair Removal?
Because the treatment targets melanin, or pigment, within the hair, darker hair generally responds best.
Very light blonde, gray, white, and some red hair may not contain enough pigment to respond effectively. Your provider will evaluate your hair and skin before beginning treatment.
Can Laser Hair Removal Be Performed on All Skin Tones?
Skin tone is an important consideration when determining whether light-based hair removal is appropriate.
Your provider will evaluate your skin tone, hair color, recent sun exposure, and treatment area before treatment and determine whether BBL HERO hair removal is appropriate for you.
Can I Get Laser Hair Removal in the Summer?
Laser hair removal can be performed at different times throughout the year, but tanning and sun exposure are important considerations.
Avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure before and after treatment. If the treatment area is recently tanned or has had significant sun exposure, your treatment may need to be postponed.
Daily sun protection is especially important for exposed treatment areas.
What Areas Can Be Treated With Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal can be performed on many areas of the face and body, including:
- Upper lip and chin
- Face
- Underarms
- Arms
- Bikini area
- Brazilian
- Legs
- Chest and abdomen
- Back
- Shoulders
Treatment time varies depending on the size and number of areas being treated.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal may be a good option for patients looking for a long-term reduction in unwanted facial or body hair.
Results vary depending on hair color and thickness, skin tone, treatment area, hormones, and individual hair-growth patterns. During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your skin and hair and determine whether laser hair removal is appropriate for you.
