Eyelid Surgery

The delicate skin around the eyes is often the first place to show signs of aging. Years of blinking, squinting, exposure to screens, and natural facial movement can lead to excess skin, puffiness, and heaviness around the eyelids. These changes can make you appear tired, sad, or older than you feel. Over time, the skin loses elasticity, fat pads can shift or protrude, and the muscles supporting the eyelids weaken. This can create hooding of the upper lids, bags beneath the eyes, or folds that disrupt the natural contour of the eye area.

Certain patients may even experience a reduction in their field of vision due to sagging upper eyelid skin. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, directly addresses these concerns by removing excess skin and tightening or repositioning the underlying tissues. This helps restore a youthful, refreshed, and naturally alert appearance.

Dr. Rammos is extensively trained in both upper and lower eyelid rejuvenation procedures. During your consultation, he will carefully examine the eyelid area and surrounding facial structures to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your needs. Eyelid surgery can be performed alone or in conjunction with other facial procedures such as a brow lift, facelift, or neck lift if desired.

Eyelid Surgery Techniques

Dr. Rammos performs eyelid surgery under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s needs.
For upper eyelid surgery, a small incision is placed within the natural crease of the eyelid. Through this incision, excess skin and small amounts of fat are removed or repositioned to open the eye and smooth the lid.

For lower eyelid surgery, the incision is typically made just beneath the lash line or inside the eyelid. This approach allows Dr. Rammos to address puffiness, fat bags, and lax skin while maintaining a natural and balanced contour beneath the eyes.

Sutures are used to close the incisions, and they are usually removed in about one week.

Preparing for Your Eyelid Surgery

As with any surgical procedure, you should stop taking medications and supplements that may increase bleeding at least two weeks before your surgery. Always consult your primary care doctor before stopping any medication.

Proper skincare and eyelid hygiene can help prepare your skin for surgery and support healing. Dr. Rammos may recommend medical-grade skincare products tailored to your needs to optimize your results.

On the day of your surgery, you should arrive with a clean face free of makeup, creams, or oils. Arrange for someone to drive you home following the procedure, as your vision may be blurry immediately afterward due to ointments and swelling.

Recovering from Eyelid Surgery

After surgery, swelling and bruising around the eyes are common and typically improve within 7 to 10 days. You may experience mild tightness or dryness in the eyelids as they heal. Cold compresses during the first 48 hours can help reduce swelling and increase comfort.

Sutures are typically removed after one week. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and social activities shortly after suture removal.
It is normal for the eyes to feel more sensitive to light for a short period. Avoid strenuous activity, bending, and heavy lifting for at least a week or as instructed by Dr. Rammos.

Final results continue to improve as swelling decreases, revealing smooth, youthful, and refreshed eyelids. Many patients enjoy long-lasting results that can endure for many years.
